Poetry Friday: Poem of the One World - Mary Oliver

Poetry Friday is hosted by Carol at Carol's Corner

For this Poetry Friday, the last of the year, I am dipping back into my new volume of Mary Oliver: A Thousand Mornings.  We have been surrounded by tradition these past few days: everything from decorating the Christmas tree, to hanging the greens, to making a dramatic entrance at the close of our Christmas Day feast with the pudding all ablaze.  Surrounded by family from far and wide, I enjoyed a few days of being connected to pieces of my past, present and future - children, siblings, husband and dog.  It was, really, lovely.  And I hope that all my Poetry Friday friends enjoyed the same...

Poem of the One World

This morning
the beautiful white heron
was floating along above the water
and then into the sky of this
the one world
we all belong to
where everything
sooner or later
is a part of everything else
which thought made me feel
for a little while
quite beautiful myself.

Happy New Year, my poetry loving friends!

  1. "where everything sooner or later is part of everything else"

Perfect thoughts on the day of a friend's father's funeral -- sad mixed in with the happy.

  2. I've never had a pudding ablaze -- sounds like it does have drama! :-) "One world we all belong to" is lovely. Thanks for sharing this peaceful poem.

  3. I could try and pick my favorite part but I think I would end up "pasting" the whole poem in this comment. Thank you for sharing this beautiful poem.

    P.S.
    I love herons :)

  4. I love Mary Oliver, and have several, but you make me want this book, too, Tara. The poem is beautiful, and my favorite line is that which Mary Lee quoted too. Thank you!

  5. I love Mary Oliver. Her new book feels soft as silk in your hands and inspires me as well as my students. Her poetry is accessible to all age levels.
